HERS Ratings

A Home Energy Rating evaluates a building's overall energy performance, assessing both the structure and its components. Certified HERS Raters are trained to assess the entire building as a cohesive system, considering elements such as the building envelope, mechanical systems, and even occupant behavior.

HERS Raters are a key contributor for many national, regional, and local energy efficiency programs, such as ENERGY STAR, the Federal Energy Efficiency Home Credit, HOME Fund programs, NAHB Green Building programs, and Enterprise Green Communities, assisting in a standardized, verifiable measure of energy performance.

We offer comprehensive HERS rating services for new construction and existing homes, providing a thorough assessment and detailed report of the home's energy performance. Our services include advanced energy modeling to calculate energy efficiency, blower door testing to measure air leakage, duct testing to assess HVAC system efficiency, and an extensive evaluation of the thermal envelope to pinpoint areas of improvement.

Our mission is to assist builders and homeowners in maximizing energy savings, lowering utility costs, and improving the comfort and sustainability of buildings, helping to create a greener future.

Inspections and Process for New Construction

Projected Rating

When introduced to a new project we begin by evaluating the building’s energy performance. Our advanced energy modeling software builds a model home based off of building plans, insulation details, window values, HVAC equipment, and a variety of other factors.

The energy model determines the building’s energy efficiency, evaluates code compliance and performance targets for various programs. We provide a projected rating, summarizing our findings on the performance of the building.

Slab Insulation Inspection

If slab insulation is installed, an inspection is conducted before the slab is poured. This inspection includes: verification of insulation type, thickness and depth.

Rough-In Inspection

When the framing is complete, before insulation is installed, an inspection is conducted. This inspection includes: flashing and house wrap, framing features, and ductwork, etc.

Pre-Drywall Inspection

Before the drywall is installed, an inspection is conducted. This inspection includes: baffles, insulation installation, types and R-values, air sealing, materials, mechanical equipment, and all other code or program requirements.

Final HERS Inspection

At the final stage, just before the home is ready to close, several tests and inspection items will be verified. These include conducting an air and duct leakage test, mechanical ventilation testing, and an inspection of the attic insulation. Necessary data is collected to finalize the energy model.

After updating the energy model with the final information, the required paperwork is submitted to RESNET for certification. Once the home is certified, a copy of the HERS paperwork will be provided along with an energy sticker.
